NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Mexican immigrant has been granted a one-year stay on a deportation order after federal immigration officials reversed their previous decision.

The New Haven Register reports (http://bit.ly/1e4KIAe ) that the lawyer for Josemaria Islas says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement overruled its May decision when it denied her request for a stay and the agency took Islas back into custody.

Attorney Danielle Briand credits local advocacy on behalf of Islas.

He was arrested in July 2012 on charges that he tried to steal a bicycle. His lawyers said he was wrongfully arrested and the charges were reduced to misdemeanors. Instead of being released, Islas was turned over to federal agents at the request of ICE.

An attempt was made to contact ICE, but its communication staff was furloughed due to the partial government shutdown.
