BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – An Asian immigrant is working with the Amish community to bring American made products overseas.

Stanley Chew and his wife, Olivia Oh, run Pennsylvania Hill, a furniture store that sells purely Amish made  products. Nothing is imported and everything is made in Ohio.

Their Boardman store on Southern Boulevard has been open for nine months and they also have a location in Hermitage.

They came to the area 16 months ago. They had never seen an Amish person before and took note of their culture.

“Who live without electricity, without phone, without Internet, no computer, no TV, no car and yet they’re still able to survive in this market,” Chew said.

When they were at an Amish retail store, they found out about the supplier.

“Next day, I immediately traveled to Sugar Creek, Apple Creek in Amish country and I looked for them one by one,” Chew said.

They’re in the process of sending an order back to Malaysia, which is their native country. Chew said there is a demand for a quality furniture there.

“American made product is so popular, so famous in Asia. They like everything American made. We just need to reach out and share with them,” Chew said.

Chew has a family member in the furniture business in Malaysia. Locally, he’s working with 20 suppliers.

“I believe my overseas buyer will get a good response, and I expect more and more orders from him,” Oh said.

The order should make its way overseas in a few weeks.

Word of the American made product is attracting customers to Pennsylvania Hill.

“A lot of the customers that come in, they say ‘we heard about you, we came in just because, you know for it being American made.’ It’s hard to find,” said Pennsylvania Hill office manager Melissa Clavin.
